I love places that stay true to what they want to do and don't concern themselves with accommodating EVERY RIDICULOUS PICKY EATER THESE DAYS. This place is legit Mexican food, spicy and they probably use lard. The chips were excellent. The salsa was great, a medium/high heat level though FYI. Unfortunately it was a bit too hot for my little niece, but the queso was perfect. Tacos are simple...meat, onions and cilantro. They even have veal brain and tripe tacos. I so wanted to try them but wasn't super hungry. The pollo tacos had a bit of a kick too, the spices on the meat. The beans and rice were some of the best I've had outside Mexico. There's probably lard in them beans. They were too good to be all veg. I'll def be back. This place rocks. Only thing is sitting in the back wasn't super great. It's loud back there as the kitchen door doesn't really close and they were running the blender a lot for margaritas. I'd opt for the mid or front area.

We've been coming here for 20 years. First read about it in Cincinnati Magazine when we lived in CT. Now that we live in Cincinnati we make the trip from Loveland, OH, to this restaurant in Newport, KY, several times a year. When I was young I was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio,TX, and also at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. We ate at many Mexican restaurants, both in Mexico and the USA. The food at La Mexicana is about as authentic as it gets!

Loved this chips and salsa! If you are in the mood for authentic Mexican, this is the place for you. The ambiance is exactly what you'd want. The barbacoa burrito was delicious, however, the Gordita was mediocre. Our server was friendly. Overall it was a great experience and we plan on returning!

Delicious and authentic Mexican! The staff was very kind and willing to be patient. All food was correct and served quickly. Had the Gordita and believe me it's nothing like the ones I've had at Taco Bell. Perfect place to grab lunch and it's very spacious. Can't wait to go back and try a margarita.

Love this hole in the wall in Newport! Best tacos and Al pastor is my favorite. Great for a spicy girls night out with the margaritas!

Solid neighborhood Mexican spot! Lots to choose from on the menu. We enjoyed our meals and had plenty of leftover! I wouldn't recommend their dessert menu, we ordered the tres leches and flan and have had much better of both elsewhere.

Checked out La Mexicana yesterday for lunch. I got many different meats in my tacos with the highlights being the Goat Birria and Carnitas. The service was fast enough to scoot in and out for my Thursday lunch break. I'll definitely be back to try more of their meat options!

Despite opening early, this place seemed to be off to a slow start from a service perspective when I walked in. The chips they brought were quite flaky and layered and the salsa robust in flavor. A HappyCow sticker on the front of the store suggested they take their vegetarian options seriously, and there were a variety of things to be gotten in tacos (and in various other forms). Of the tacos I ordered, the huitlacoche (a fungus that crows on corn) and squash blossom were things you'd struggle to find in this region, while the "vegetariano" was less interesting, a mix of things that tasted mostly of iceberg lettuce despite the cheese on top. I could see where other reviewers were concerned about rising costs (though if all I wanted was cheap calories I could have ordered one or two tacos and just ate all the chips), but I found it food money well spent. This isn't the sort of place that mills its own corn, but the tortillas they use are the same ones I get at specialty markets and with the open kitchen in front, you won't wonder that everything is freshly made.
